The thumb decides not to oppose

An interesting thought crossed my mind in a boring afternoon meeting.
What will happen if the thumb decides not to oppose?
Interesting! Ain't it? Well the thought itself has roots in the subject of the discussion in the meeting - Hiring the right person! One unseasoned manager quoted "I would rather wait for the right person than hire anyone". My thoughts ran wild. What are you looking in a recruit. What is the definition of the right person. Probably the manager in question wanted someone who was of a particular height, weight, sex, or skin color. Because a right person is always a person matched to a job. Here the question was matching the person to the manager. Someone who would meet all the aspirations of the manager.
Agreed that hiring a new person is akin to planting a tree. You need to be careful about what you sow. Cause it will come to haunt you probably the rest of your productive life. But what about the "wait". One cannot wait for ever. There are people with the right skill set. I fail to understand the meaning of the right person. The right person for one may be a misfit for the other. Your right person may not necessarily be the right person for everyone. Everyone's definition of right person is different.
As a manager your job is to deal with people. You cannot say that you will not hire because you are waiting endlessly for someone who meets your parameters. Finding someone like yourself is like finding another individual with the same set of finger prints as yours. It just does not exist. People come with their individual characteristics.
As managers, your skills lie in managing people, not just right people. The primary focus should be on finding the right skills and attitude and then mentoring the recruit. A pertinent question here is that if one can wait for the right person for 6 months, 8 months, a release cycle of a product, or even a longer duration, then is the person actually required? You might as well save the company some money by not hiring at all.
By "right person" the manager probably meant someone who would not oppose or question any decision, instruction, or command.
The question then is, what if the thumb decided not to oppose?

Alkahest

Alkahest is a universal solvent - one that could dissolve just about anything. Once it was the most sought solvent. Chemists across the world wanted it. Were they out of their minds. What would they keep it in?
